We love this time of year here at Brar Dentistry! If you’re like us, you love summer and all the fun it brings with it. You get to spend more time with the kids since school is finally out.
There are weddings, reunions, and other special occasions. And how about the neighborhood cookouts and the family vacations! The warm weather also invites us out into the fresh air to enjoy swimming and other summer sports.
This season gives us so many opportunities to get out there and have some fun with family and friends. But it can also pose some unique problems for your smile. That’s no reason not to enjoy summer! It’s just important to know about some of those problems so you can better protect yourself from them.
That’s what today’s blog is all about. Our team at Brar Dentistry is offering three ways you can protect the smiles of everyone in your family this summer!
Smile Tip #1: Protect Your Lips!
When you’re about to enjoy a day out in the hot sun, what’s one of the first things you do? You probably thought about sunscreen, right? We all are very familiar with the value of using sunblock to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. That’s why lathering up with SPF is one of the first things we do before we roll out the beach towels or lace up the baseball cleats.
But surprisingly, it’s not as much of a habit to protect our lips. One of the contributing factors of oral cancer is too much sun exposure. So it’s incredibly important to remember to wear sunscreen, not just on your body, but on your face and lips.
So next time you’re at the drugstore stocking up on sunblock, remember to grab an SPF lip balm, preferably with an SPF of 30 or above. Carry it with you throughout the day and reapply when necessary. This will help lower your risk of oral cancer while you’re out soaking up the sun!
Smile Tip #2: Stay Hydrated!
During the hot summer months, you can lose a lot of essential fluids by sweating, even if you’re simply standing still! It’s especially true if you’re a physically active person or an athlete. So it’s important to stay well-hydrated.
But replenishing all the fluids you’re losing can’t be done with just any type of liquid. Water is what your body needs! As much as we’d like to think we’re doing our health a favor by reaching for that sports drink or fruit juice, the added sugars you find in them are only putting you at risk for tooth decay and cavities.
To stay adequately hydrated, you have to drink plenty of water all throughout the day. Drinking eight glasses a day is a bit outdated, and experts now suggest we need anywhere from 2-3 liters a day, depending on your age, sex, and physical activity. Some people may even require more than that.
You might be wondering what this really has to do with your smile? Without enough water, you risk dehydration, which can cause dry mouth. Saliva is an important part of your oral health. It keeps your tooth enamel strong, it helps repair microscopic damage to your teeth, and it helps wash away food particles and prevents the spread of harmful bacteria in your mouth.
Without enough saliva, your teeth are no longer protected. That’s why it’s so important to stay properly hydrated everyday, but especially during the hot summer months.
Smile Tip #3: Be Prepared!
As we said, summer invites all kinds of recreational activities. If you or someone in your family likes to stay active or participates in summer sports, you need to be prepared for potential dental emergencies.
One of the ways you can do that is to try to prevent them in the first place with an athletic mouthguard from Brar Dentistry. When you wear a protective mouthguard, you decrease the risk of oral injuries such as damage to the soft tissues inside the mouth or a knocked out tooth. You can always avoid injury, but a mouthguard is a great way to protect yourself if a sports-related accident should occur.
You can also make sure to keep our number stored in your phone so that if something should happen, you don’t have to waste precious time searching for emergency dental services nearby. When you need us, our team at Brar Dentistry is here to help you!
