Guide to your dental emergency
In the clinical sense, a dental emergency is any situation that is an immediate threat to the life of your teeth or the health of your dental structure. In the real sense, a dental emergency is whatever you feel is an emergency. It is always better to be safe than sorry. If you come into our office with a dental emergency, we will take care of you.
Some common dental emergencies that we see at Brar Dentistry include cracked or broken teeth. These issues put the life of your teeth in danger. Infected teeth is a big issue as well. Not only can the infection cause you to lose your tooth, but it could put the rest of your teeth in danger as well.
What to do if a dental emergency strikes
I've been coming to see Dr. Brar—I started in mid-1995. He's absolutely professional. He makes you feel so comfortable. He is so adept at so many—he can handle anything that comes up. I've had all sorts of normal problems, but he's also done—I have a whole bunch of implants that he's done, a partial denture, everything. He's just been fantastic with all the—you just feel comfortable. It's not only that you feel comfortable. I've had, I don't know how many emergencies over the course of two decades. I literally had a problem with loose teeth.
One of the worst was I was on the way to a client meeting. I deal with CEOs and senior teams of corporations. One morning, on the way to one of those meetings, I had a really obvious tooth come out in the front of my mouth. I remember walking in there saying I looked like I was a character out of Deliverance with this giant cap in my mouth. These were really serious, serious situations. He always gets you in. He always, always finds a way to get you in. I don't know how he does it, but he does.
The first thing you need to do is call our office immediately at 630-883-0970. We will help you know what your next steps should be. We will outline any first aid that you can do to give your smile the best chance of survival and begin making arrangements for your arrival. This way, we can get you in to see Dr. Brar or Dr. Bram as quickly as possible.
You may have to wait a little, but we will do all we can to get you in quickly when you get here. We accept walk-ins and are open until 7:00 p.m. most days. We will even see emergency patients until 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
Dealing with a knocked tooth
You should start by finding the tooth. Clean it off with warm water and then place it in a cup of milk. The calcium in the milk will help keep the tooth alive while you are on your way to the dental office. If you are bleeding, make sure to stop the bleeding with gauze or a clean cloth.
